MSI PhD Completion

Congratulations

The Mathematical Sciences Institute are proud to announce the PhD completion of Qirui Li earlier this month. Qirui Li joined the MSI in December 2011, supervised by Xu-Jia Wang.

Qirui Li said “It is a great honour to receive my PhD in mathematics from the ANU. Before the intellectually stimulating mathematical adventures at this very top university in Australia, I have studied pure mathematics in China for several years. I would like to give thanks to the MSI, an extraordinary institute for mathematical research, at which I received two years of training starting from December 2011. My thesis is focused on the regularity of optimal transportation and the associated Monge-Ampere type equations. In particular some interesting regularity and singularity results of the optimal mapping are obtained for the original cost function proposed by Monge in 1781. After completing the PhD, I will continue to undertake high-quality mathematical research. My ambitious future plan is to gradually become a well-recognised researcher.

Throughout my ANU life, the MSI offered me unlimited opportunities for excellence. It is there that I had the first experience of working with world-renowned mathematicians. I learned much from the luminaries there who have different mathematical expertise and outlook. Moreover the vigorous visitors program at the MSI creates the much needed environment for me to catch up with recent developments in the area and exchange ideas with internationally leading experts. The MSI also provides a travel grant which supports PhD students to participate in national and international conferences. Funded by this grant, I attended the winter school in Brisbane in 2012 and contributed a talk in the annual meeting of the Australian Mathematical Society in 2013.

I have been fortunate to have been helped and supported by many people at the MSI. It is their support that gives me great inspiration and impetus for future work. My main debt of gratitude is to my mentor Xu-Jia Wang. He exposed me to his philosophy, and especially to his deep insight and perspicacity in mathematics, which for me has been a guiding light. My academic experience gained from the MSI is undoubtedly invaluable.”

The MSI would like to congratulate Qirui Li on this wonderful achievement.
