Knot theory of the study of knotted strings in 3-dimensional space. It's difficult to tell knots apart, so we study knot invariants --- algebraic quantities one can associate to a knot, which do not depend on how the knot is rearranged or deformed. Many of these invariants are based on skein theories, invariants defined by rules which allow recursively replacing a part of the knot with something simpler, according to particular rules. This project will involve looking for new examples of skein theories for knots, and generalisations such as knotted trivalent graphs.
