MSI Friends and Alumni: Quantum billiards

Professor Andrew Hassell will be presenting a special lecture for MSI's Alumni, friends and colleagues. The presentation will be followed by drinks, hors-d’oeuvres and a chance to meet and chat with the speaker and other members of the MSI.

A quantum billiard is a quantum particle moving on a bounded region in the plane. As the energy of the particle gets larger and larger,and under suitable conditions, the particle behaves like a classical billiard ball for longer and longer periods of time - sometimes, for ever! However, this phenomenon is only imperfectly understood at present, and is a very active area of mathematical and physical research, often called `quantum chaos’. In this talk, using mostly pictures, I will give a taste of this tantalising research area.

About the speaker 

Andrew Hassell took his bachelor’s degree in mathematics at ANU and his PhD at MIT. After two years at Stanford University he returned to Australia on an ARC Postdoctoral Fellowship and has been at ANU since 1996. He held an ARC Research Fellowship during 1999-2004 and is currently a Professor of Mathematics and ARC Future Fellow. Honours awarded to Andrew include Australia’s first gold medal at the International Mathematical Olympiad in 1985, a University Medal in 1989, and Fulbright award to study in the United States 1990-94, the Australian Mathematical Society Medal in 2003 and election to the Australian Academy of Science in 2013. Andrew’s area of research is mathematical analysis, particularly the solution of differential equations using a technique known as microlocal analysis. He is a leading international figure in the areas of spectral theory, scattering theory, the time-dependent Schroedinger equation, quantum chaos and numerical methods.
