Professor Andrew Hassell will be presenting a special lecture for MSI's Alumni, friends and colleagues. The presentation will be followed by drinks, hors-d’oeuvres and a chance to meet and chat with the speaker and other members of the MSI.
Attendance at these special lectures is by invitation only, so if you would like to attend, please register as a friend of MSI to receive your invitation.
A quantum billiard is a quantum particle moving on a bounded region in the plane. As the energy of the particle gets larger and larger, and under suitable conditions, the particle behaves like a classical billiard ball for longer and longer periods of time - sometimes, for ever! However, this phenomenon is only imperfectly understood at present, and is a very active area of mathematical and physical research, often called `quantum chaos’. In this talk, using mostly pictures, I will give a taste of this tantalising research area.
