Graduate student seminar: Use of administrative data for productivity analysis

Administrative data has been identified as one of the most useful Big Data sources. Governments are realising the advantages of making better use of and providing access to their administrative datasets. The 2017 Productivity Commission inquiry into Data Availability and Use highlighted the opportunities to make better use of administrative data to inform policy development. The Australian Bureau of Statistics is exploring the use of administrative data sources for statistical purposes. There are many research projects underway exploring the feasibility of administrative data sources to inform policy development.

My research adds to the current effort to make better use of administrative data for research. In particular, I explore the relationships between firm connections and firm performance. In this talk, I will discuss the methods I use to address the challenges in dealing with high dimensionality in model estimation. I will discuss considerations when I integrate data from multiple sources. Finally, I will share some insights from my research.
