In this Special Year, we will focus on the areas of probability, stochastic processes, and statistics. Apart from their deep intrinsic mathematical interest, and relations to a wide variety of areas of pure and applied mathematics, these areas provide extremely useful theory and technologies that underpin the modelling and solution of a vast number of real-world phenomena and problems. Applications span a range from genetics to finance and insurance, from 'big data' analysis and computer science to quantum physics and medicine, from the study of regularity in patterns of spatial data and time series to extreme events in weather and climatology; and many others.
This Special Year will provide a unique opportunity for Australian researchers, practitioners and students to hear, meet, and mingle with some of the most prominent international and Australian researchers currently working in these areas. It will also provide a platform for exchanging new ideas and initiating collaborations with industry and government.
