Canberra Mathematics Enrichment Programme
Body
Since 1965, ANU mathematicians have run enrichment classes on Friday nights for talented high school students. We cover a range of extra-curricular material with an emphasis on solving problems in a fun and relaxed atmosphere.
The aims of CMEP are to
- foster enjoyment in mathematics;
- develop problem-solving skills; and
- prepare for proof-based mathematics competitions.
Classes are held on campus for about 30 Friday evenings each year, all during school term. Instructors are professional mathematicians who volunteer their time and enthusiasm for CMEP. Alas, it is necessary to restrict the number of students attending so the classes are by invitation only. Selection is based on student performance in other mathematical activities and on teacher recommendation. All invitations to participate will be sent through schools.
CMEP is organised in partnership with the Australian Mathematics Trust. We highly recommend the enrichment materials and competitions provided by the AMT, which are usually accessed through your school. Strong performance in AMT activities is a good indicator of a student's suitability for CMEP, and vice versa.
For teachers
Teachers are urged to contact the CMEP team at any time with recommendations of capable students whom they think would benefit from the programme. In particular, at the end of each year we seek year 7 nominations for our next year 8 cohort.
Teachers: please nominate your student(s) here
Please nominate the top one or two students in your school at each year level, coordinating with other teachers at your school. Remember that some in years 9 to 12 may be participating already. You can nominate more than two if you have several students who are eager to go above and beyond the curriculum. We maintain a waiting list of such extra students for when space becomes available, and usually do have room for year 11 and 12 students. We actively seek diversity, although our main criterion is mathematical aptitude. To compare across schools, it helps us to have some comments about the students' ability and enthusiasm. We require a school email address to eventually send invitations.
We love to hear from teachers. Perhaps you'd like to come along and see what we do, or talk with us about enrichment activities at your school.
For students and parents
We are delighted that you are enthusiastic about mathematics but sadly we have limited capacity. Importantly, CMEP is not about helping you get better marks in school. Our material is outside the school curriculum. If you're still keen, then you should talk to your maths teacher about AMT competitions and enrichment, and perhaps recommending you for CMEP. We remain happy to discuss enrichment opportunities, but find it more efficient and productive to support a teacher who can then support many students.
A teacher nomination does not guarantee the student will be invited. Invitations (sent via your school) will include directions to classes and how to register. Please note that in order to register for CMEP you must be either a current attendee or a newly invited student.
