Description

Emeritus Professor Derek Robinson was elected to the Australian Academy of Science in 1980 for his pioneering work in mathematical physics. His achievements include algebraic axiomatization of quantum field theory and rigorous analysis of nonequilibrium statistical mechanics.
Derek has worked on many topics over his long career. Of particular importance has been the discovery of the now famous Lieb-Robinson bounds which control the rate of information travel in non-relativistic systems. Lieb-Robinson bounds are an essential ingredient in much of the recent progress in mathematical quantum many-body physics, including practical application in schemes for quantum computing. Derek is also very well known for his classic two-volume book with Ola Bratteli on applications of operator algebra theory to quantum statistical physics. These wide-ranging books describe the general structure of equilibrium states, the KMS-condition and stability, quantum spin systems and continuous systems.
