Description

Abstract:

Phylogenetic inference is one of the most important problems in biology to reconstruct evolutionary relationships among species. With the advent of next generation sequencing technologies, genome-scale data are now routinely used in evolutionary studies, for example, to trace the origin of SARS-CoV-2 viruses. While these data provide us an unprecedented opportunity to resolve many biological questions, they pose new computational challenges for existing phyogenetic methods and statistical modeling challenges for simplyfing assumptions far removed from reality. In this talk I will present new models and methods implemented in the IQ-TREE software to address these challenges and future perspectives to cope with data in the post genomic era.

The slides for this talk are available here (PPT 8.42MB).

Bio:

Dr. Minh Bui is a Senior Lecturer at the School of Computing, Australian National University. He is the leader of Computational Phylogenomics Lab, with the motto of enabling evolutionary research in the genomic era. Minh leads an international team that has developped the widely used phylogenetics software IQ-TREE (http://www.iqtree.org), currently funded by the Chan-Zuckerberg Initiative. He is the 2021 Highly Cited Researcher (Web of Science) and the 2019 Australian Field Leader in Evolutionary Biology.

Minh obtained his B.Sc. in Computer Science from the Vietnam National University in 2001, M.Sc. in Applied Computer Science from the University of Freiburg, Germany in 2005, and Ph.D. in Bioinformatics from the University of Vienna, Austria in 2009.
