Abstract:
Harish-Chandra was born a hundred years ago on 11 October 1923 in Kanpur, India. He started his academic journey as a theoretical physicist, obtaining his PhD at the age of 24 under the supervision of Dirac, but shortly after moved to mathematics. He made outstanding contributions to representation theory and harmonic analysis and became one of the leading mathematicians of the 20th century. Since 1963 he worked at the Institute for Advanced Studies in Princeton, until his death at the age of 60. In this talk we’ll mark his centenary birth anniversary and describe few of his achievements and mathematical legacy.
