Description

Abstract: Semi-simple Lie algebras, connected quivers, finite reflection groups and so forth. Root systems arise in the classification of quite an array of mathematical objects. In this talk we will take a look at the classification of algebraic groups, more specifically reductive linear algebraic groups over algebraically closed fields, via root systems. In particular we will look at how to associate a root system to a connected linear algebraic group, and conversely, how to construct a reductive algebraic group from a given root datum.
