Abstract: 

Archimedes work "Measurement of a Circle" is said to contain the earliest documented evidence for the method of calculating the area of a circular sector. We discuss new evidence concerning circular sectors and segments from ancient Mesopotamia, over a thousand years before the time of Archimedes.
