Description

Abstract: Semirings are, essentially, rings without subtraction. While their definition is fairly naive, their theory becomes much more complicated and richer in some ways than usual ring theory. They are also way more abundant in other fields of mathematics. This talk would be a brief overview of the basic concepts underlying the theory. Time permitting, he would present a few accessible fascinating results, both new and old, from the world of semirings.

A basic familiarity with classical rings and elementary category theory would be beneficial, though not necessary.
