The student will read some books or papers at the interface between number theory and algebraic geometry and meet regularly with me to discuss them. The goal is to move toward the edge of contemporary research. One possibility would be to read some classic books on the arithmetic theory of elliptic curves, which has recently had exciting applications, such as in the proof of Fermat's Last Theorem, but other topics are also possible
