About

The mathematical data science research area is focused in the ANU Mathematical Data Science Centre (MDSC). The MDSC was created to be a global leader in the development of the mathematical theory of data science, and to train the next generation of mathematical data scientists.

Data science is a rapidly developing area with tremendous impact on everyday life. Nowadays, almost every form of information extraction is labelled data science, and data scientists can be found in every scientific discipline. At the same time, an overwhelming majority of data scientists focus on domain-specific problems rather than on the fundamental understanding of phenomena at the heart of information extraction: namely, when, and why information extraction is possible, and how to make it efficient.

The ANU Mathematical Data Science Centre's main research objective is mathematical innovation relating to data science. To advance the field, we need to develop a sophisticated mathematical machinery that will allow researchers to gain insights and extract information from significant volumes of data.  We should not be satisfied with the “what” but also ask the “how” and “why”. To that end, our mathematical data science research area aims to construct, theoretically study, efficiently implement, and apply data analysis methods which incorporate ideas from pure mathematics.

I am interested in using a multi-parameter study of invariants from algebraic topology to do statistical shape analysis. The goal is to quantitatively compare geometric objects such as a set of bones, tumours, leaves, bird beaks, etc. I have both theory and application projects.
