The dedicated study of Ethics in Mathematics is a relatively new endeavour, brought about by a recent increase in awareness of the impact mathematics, mathematical work, and mathematicians can have on wider society. There are very few groups dedicated to studying this, one of which being the Ethics in Mathematics Project.
In this talk we will give an overview of the core, foundational principles and ideas behind the project, outlining the insights it has developed and used. We will discuss the origins and inspirations for these insights, and the lessons learned throughout the project so far. And we finish by explaining what sorts of resources and events we have put together by using those insights, and how others might also make use of them to create material relevant for their own particular settings and environments, as well as outlining our current research.
Ethics in Mathematics has come a long way in the past 10 years, and is now at the point where anyone can “pick it up and run with it” without having to carry out their own foundational research.
