Teresa Heiss
Diego Marcondes
Gleb Smirnov
Katharine Turner
Thomas Burnett
Thomas started his PhD in 2024 under the supervision of Katharine Turner.
Teresa Heiss
Teresa's research is in Topological Data Analysis, which studies the shape of data, in particular the hole-structure. This has numerous applications, in particular in fields where functional properties are determined by shape, like in material science: Tunnel-shaped holes can channel ions from anode to cathode in a battery; and a material with pores of the right shape can capture greenhouse gases. She is currently finishing her PhD at IST Austria and will be joining ANU in early 2025.

Diego Marcondes
Diego's research interests are in Probability, Stochastic Processes, Mathematical Epidemiology, Statistics and Mathematics of Machine Learning. He is currently a post-doctorate researcher at the Computer Science Department at IME-USP and a Postdoctoral Visiting Scholar at Texas A&M, and will be joining ANU in early 2025.

Gleb Smirnov
Hello! My name is Gleb. I am a research associate at the University of Geneva and will soon join ANU as an MSI Fellow. I initially specialized in symplectic geometry and topology, focusing on four-dimensional symplectic manifolds. My interests have since changed, leading me towards probability and statistics. In particular, I am attracted to various aspects of optimal hypothesis testing and its connections to functional analysis and geometry.
Katharine Turner
Katharine Turner is Director of the MDSC. Her research is in Topological Data Analysis, with particular focus on the mathematical foundations for statistical analysis using topological descriptors, as well as the theory and applications to statistical shape analysis and to time-varying data. She is currently the international PI for the INRIA International Associate Team Toptime (with INRIA PI Nina Otter).
